A picture book which has gleaned through photograph archives to find photographs, postcards, rug dealer's cards etc. Pictures include rugs underfoot during the welcoming of Emperor Wilhelm II in 1917, rugs in front and under the supervisors who restored the Grand Bazar after the 1984 earthquake, rugs inside a mosque in Nide, rugs in front of the class of an Istanbul Armenian school in 1932, rugs in front and in back of families, brides and grooms and on and on. 2015, 99 p., 182 illus., nearly all in black and white, 30 x 23 cm. As might be expected, the focus is often on people, showing them standing on, or in front of rugs. The text includes selections from a diary of Daniel Häberlin on his travels through Turkey in 1646, and on radiocarbon dating of some of these kilims. As with Allane's earlier book, the type is small and a lot of information is packed into the book. Used, fair; defective: the portfolio, text describing the plates for volume I, and plate 20 are missing; edges of sheets chipped, but not affecting the illustration. The plates are of designs from embroideries, clothing, cloth, rugs from the Caucasus, Turkey, Iran, India, China, Japan, Central Asia.
